The function of the horse in Chekhov's“The Lament”

-Attitude of passengers& young cab driver to Iona’s grief
-The relation between the horse and Iona
-Function 1: The horse is a comparison and irony to those cold-hearted
people.
-Function 2: The horse is a symbol of unreal things in the society.
(Because Chekhov did not create a human showing compassion to Iona) And the
unreal thing is Chekhov’s wish to the society.
-Function 3: The horse’s faithfulness and compassion to Iona moves the
readers and calls for the society to show compassion to people in grief.
